UNIQUE ENERGY SAVING SURGE PROTECTION

Filtering and Line Conditioning

The CR-Max unit was primarily designed for surge suppression with the additional benefits of noise filtering and A/C line conditioning. However, we have demonstrated real kilowatt energy saving from the low teens to over 20% per month. In separate extreme cases, CR-Max has been paid for within three months of energy savings and with the elimination of service calls.
CR-Max protects your facility plus saves real energy by a method that is not invasive to electrical, electronic appliance and commercial equipment control systems. This assures you of maximum productivity. We do not employ the NOLA motor control technology (reduction of voltage) or any other variation of active voltage or current control. Our device contains only passive electronic components and is simply installed in parallel with the electrical service as are other surge protection devices. With the CR-Max installed, at the load or where the power is used, there is no change in the energy supply to the end use.

On the line side; however, less energy is required from the utility to perform the same amount of work. The filtering capacitors in our units usually counter the inductive loading in the electrical network on which they are installed, resulting in improved power factor, line loss reduction, current carrying capacity and voltage stability.

Power factor correction is also treated with CR-Max, although Power Factor Correction is not the primary objective. Other energy saving products on the market and capacitor bank applications, which rely upon power factor correction, do not achieve our percentage of real savings at the utility meter. Correcting the phase relationship of voltage and current from a power factor of 0.75 to unity (1.0) will usually only save 1% to 4% in real kilowatt usage.
If the power factor is over unity, it must be corrected before the CR-Max can be installed.
Eliminating the power factor penalty and with metering in kilowatts, you will reduce line loss, increase current carrying capacity and stabilize voltage; usually no greater than 4% of actual billed savings.

CR-Max filters or conditions various energy sapping properties to guarantee at least 10% kilowatt hour savings, and saves much more in kVA, kVAR and Demand.

Surge Suppression

The CR-MAX surge protection system follows ANSI/IEEE C62.11-1999. M.O.V.'s and filter capacitors are used to achieve surge and spike protection. M.O.V.'s were chosen as they have greater handling capability than the high-speed semi-conductors such as (silicon avalanche diodes). They have no follow-on-current and their response time is more than sufficient for the types of transients encountered in the A/C mains environment. The total combined ratings CR-MAX provided by their M.O.V.'s - energy handling capabilities, clamping voltages, nominal operating voltages and component surge life expectancy at + 10% nominal readings. The 8/20 micro second response curve is often cited as the speed of the M.O.V. response time, when in fact they can begin to shunt spike and transient current from the line in as little as 1 nanoseconds. Small filter capacitors of the correct value are used to provide a low impedance path to ground for high frequency transients and noise. These have a protection rating of 1.3 (kV).

Noise Filtering and A/C Line Conditioning

CR-Max has demonstrated significant improvement in kilowatt reduction on electrical networks where the power factor has already been improved near unity.

Although not specifically addressed to correct specific harmonic distortion and their symptoms in the industrial environment, the interaction of the M.O.V.'s, small filter capacitors and larger filter capacitors do attenuate harmonics. The third and fifth harmonics are reduced to 1 to 2 dB. The higher harmonic multiples above are largely shunted to ground along with the higher frequency random noise and transients. Because transients are high frequency in nature, they partially immobilize the magnetic field in motors. Total Harmonic Distortion is reduced significantly with the use of our unit. Reduced Harmonics and Noise & Surge Suppression, evidenced by more efficient waveforms, result in less heat loss in electrical equipment, especially motors and inductive loads. The elimination of excess high frequency current contributes to definite saving in overall kilowatt usage per month and increased life of equipment.

Additional benefits include lower currents on the neutral conductor, resulting in safer operating conditions; better reception on audio-visual equipment and reduction in detrimental effects of noise-based interference and distortions.

Availability and application

CR-Max comes in various sizes, both single and three phase. Many times, we encounter a problem with home's or business's wiring. When the wiring was put in, it was Up-To-Code. However, today we have added a lot more electronics in everything we use. For example, computers were not in large use just 10 years ago. Our stoves now have electronics controls along with our washing machines. Seems everything has gone to electronics controls.

All these electronic controls are changing the A/C wave current into D/C squared wave current. This causes a lot of harmonic distortion. There has even been new research stating that this kind of harmonic distortion is very health hazardous.

Another problem is a FIRE HARZARD. If your wiring is out-dated by new modern NEC coding. You may have this fire hazard. This is where the ground and neutral has a double bonding between them. With this double grounding to the neutral, all this harmonic distortion (in the form of current) is building up and has to go somewhere. The easiest way to go is to the "path of least resistance." This is the Ground and ground is usually a bare naked wire. If this wire is carrying a current from the double bonding, this wire can heat up and cause a fire.

The Circuit Rider can only tollerate very little current on ground for it to work. Thus, when we have dealers or sales agents come see you about lowering your kWh useage, they will do an inspection to see if you have the double grounding problem. If you do, they will help you identify this problem and suggest the proper ways to get it fixed.

Five Years of Work

It's been five years since we started working with the Circuit Rider. When we started, there were only 7 units available. Since Paul Lindsey is a Master Electrician, we discovered that we needed many more different units. These units were needed for bigger motor applications and larger commercial and industrial wiring.

What has been interesting is the different amounts of savings we have realized. For example, homes average between 17 - 22% reduction of kWh useage. However, we have seen as high as a 49% reduction of kWh. Why such a large range? It depends on the wiring of the home and how much induction is being utilized. For years, the ground and neutral was considered the same thing. In reality, they were never the same, but the code and electricians used them as the same.

With all of the electronics that are being used today, neutral and ground are very different. This has lead many older buildings having current on the ground. This is a FIRE harzard. Ground wires can be bare wires that are running up against wood or sheet rock. Carrying current makes them hot and this can ignite the wood or sheet rock. Ground must stay free of any and all current, in case of a fault and it can then be taken to ground. With the current already on the ground, this can interfere with the ground's ability to carry this fault to ground.

We have found out, that if there is double bonding between the ground and the neutral, this will make the Circuit Rider increase the KWh on the electric bill. So, we need the double bonding to be corrected for two reasons: (1) Eliminate a potential fire hazard, and (2) to enable the Circuit Rider to decrease the amount of kWh on the electrical bill.

We are very happy with what has happened for our customers in the past. But, we are currently working on better applications and more knowledge of the Circuit Rider. This will lead to better savings and better surge and downline lightning protection.
